Asheville Ranks High in Healthcare

One of the most common questions from those considering a move to the Asheville area, especially those planning retirement here, relates to the quality and availability of healthcare. Some excellent answers are available in the March 2017 of Business North Carolina that ranks the state’s best hospitals.

Mission Hospital in Asheville tied for first in the annual rankings with acclaimed Duke University Hospital. Mission is the flagship of the state’s sixth largest hospital system that includes six medical centers as well as various outpatient and surgery centers in Western North Carolina. To further enhance its capabilities and service, construction is underway on a $400 million patient tower.

According to the magazine, the rankings are “largely based on information provided by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, including patient-satisfaction surveys, infection rates, and readmission and death rates for common conditions and procedures.” Also considered was criteria from Blue Cross and Blue Shield, U.S. News & World Report and The Leapfrog Group, a Washington, D.C.-based organization that grades hospitals  based on patient-safety records. Mission also was one of 22 North Carolina hospitals that appeared on rankings from U.S. News & World Report, including 12 specialty or procedure areas that were “high performing.”

Perhaps even more telling was that Mission was ranked third based on the percentage of patients (83%) who would recommend the hospital to others. That’s based on a nationally recognized survey completed by patients after discharge. The national average is 72%.

Quality of leadership certainly is an important factor in a hospital’s performance, and Mission Health CEO Ron Paulus was one of only two North Carolina executives on a list of top physician leaders compiled by Becker’s Hospital Review.

This level of accomplishment definitely should be reassuring to local residents and those considering a move to the Asheville area.
